Freelance Journalism
As a freelance journalist since 1991, I have developed strong research
and writing skills, and have learned the importance of meeting deadlines.
I pride myself in maintaining solid relationships with the editors
with whom I work, as I understand that, though my work is quite
creative, I am performing a service. Generating copy, quite simply,
is first and foremost my business, and I treat each assignment that
way: as a business proposition that has a monetary value, as well
as quality and time demands attached.
My areas of expertise include interior design, the arts-both visual
and dramatic, human interest, the environment and relationships;
but my curiosity and strong research skills enable me to undertake
article assignments that move beyond these boundaries. If you click
on the portfolio icon and peruse my clips, you'll see that I have
written about a broad variety of subjects.
Please do examine my clips, as it's the most efficient way to discover
whether a writer's voice and style are simpatico with
your publication's content. If you like what you see, but you feel
my style is slightly off in some way, let's talk, as
I am adept at studying past issues of a publication in order to
tailor writing to the publication's style.
I'd say that one of the most important things I could tell you
about myself as a writer, that is-is that I am simply passionate
about writing. As Emile Zola wrote, If you ask me what I came
into this world to do, I will tell you: I came to live out loud.
Writing is a fabulous way to live out loud, and it means
I am a perpetual student!

Design Writing
As a design writer for magazines, I thrive on the beauty
about which I am constantly writing. I worked in the design field
for a while, thinking that I loved beautiful rooms so much that
I wanted to create them myself. But I found that the writer in me
was stronger than the design devotee, so I chose to dedicate as
much of my writing life to design as possible. And a wonderful decision
it was! An editor at one of the national shelter magazines for which
I write recently told me that I write wonderful leads that drop
the reader right into the story. She also said that my use of language
and the journalistic flow that I bring to the articles is outstanding.
I like that I have combined two loves: writing and interior design.
I recently published my first design book, a collaborative effort
with a former editor, Kira Wilson Gould. "Big Home, Big Challenge:
Design Solutions for Larger Spaces" was published by McGraw-Hill
in October 2003. I hope this will be the first of many design books
in my future.
I also write a monthly interior design column for Distinction
Magazine. Design File is a product driven, and each of the three
products featured share a common theme. This writing, and interior
design trend writing are different than the complex home features
that I write, but no less fun!

Book Proposals
In the past year, I have written two comprehensive book proposals
for clients. I drew from interviews that I conducted to write two
chapters and synopses of the remaining chapters in one situation;
in the other situation, I acted as a book doctor-editing the material
and helping the author to create cohesive narrative. See the testimonial
section of my Web site for rave reviews!
Copy Writing
I have a variety of clients for whom I provide copy for publications,
including advertorial copy, newsletters and websites. If research
is required, I conduct all research, including interviews with any
pertinent persons who need to be quoted. Below are samples of some
of the copy I've produced.

Editing
It is always important for someone other than the person
who generated copy to review it in order to catch grammatical mistakes
and typos. This is the case even for the most experienced writers.
I pride myself in thorough editing and have earned the respect of
my clients, who depend upon my editing skills when publishing material.
